SIGNIFICANT STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP IN MYKOLAIV –
BUILDING THE FUTURE OF UKRAINIAN CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH PHYSICAL EDUCATION
European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry and the Mykolaiv Regional Branch of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine have concluded a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a long-term strategic partnership to develop children's and youth physical education, coach education, youth participation, research, inclusion, reconstruction and international cooperation.

Picture
The agreement creates a shared strategic foundation, particularly for implementing the EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE 2026–2036 programme in the Mykolaiv region and more broadly in Southern Ukraine. Under the agreement, the Mykolaiv regional branch of the Olympic Committee is recognised as one of E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry's key strategic Ukrainian partners in developing children's and youth physical education, coach education and education through sport.
This is not merely cooperation concerning sport.
It is about children's rights, human dignity, the future and hope.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS MORE THAN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY – ESPECIALLY IN THE MIDST OF WAR
Children and young people in the Mykolaiv region have been forced to live in conditions that no child should ever have to experience. The war has affected schooling, safety, families, communities, and physical activity and educational infrastructure.

In the MoU, the parties recognise this reality. According to the agreement, physical education, sport, coach education, youth participation and international cooperation can promote the physical, psychological and social well-being of children and young people. This is particularly important in communities affected by war, crises, displacement and the destruction of educational and physical activity infrastructure.
Physical education can offer a child something very fundamental: the opportunity to move, learn, participate, belong to a group, make friends, experience success and rebuild confidence in the future.
For this reason, physical education should not be regarded as a luxury or a secondary activity in wartime conditions. It can be part of a child's normal life, well-being, sense of community and the building of the future.
CHILDREN DID NOT START THE WAR
Perhaps the most important message of the entire partnership is recorded in the concluding words of the cooperation agreement:
Children and young people affected by war and crises need more than simply the opportunity to survive.
They need opportunities for movement, education, participation, friendship, the spirit of FAIR PLAY, development, belonging and hope. At the same time, the agreement states unequivocally that children did not create the war or the crisis and that their rights to physical activity, education, participation, safety and human dignity must be respected.
This principle forms the moral foundation of the entire strategic cooperation.
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT.

RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS.
THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT AND FAIR PLAY – VALUES THAT UKRAINE'S FUTURE NEEDS
The Olympic spirit is much more than competition, medals and sporting achievements. Its educational significance can be associated with respect, friendship, striving for excellence, international understanding and bringing people together through sport.
These values have particular significance precisely when society is being tested by war.
From the perspective of this cooperation, FAIR PLAY means fairness, equality, respect for others, following rules, responsibility and ensuring that no one is left outside.
The objectives of the MoU's FAIR PLAY Team activities include the joy of movement, physical activity, participation, equality, friendship, respect, teamwork, inclusion, community and well-being. The agreement expressly emphasises that sport and physical education should not be seen solely as competition or the pursuit of sporting results, but also as instruments of education, inclusion, participation, well-being, recovery and hope.
This is a powerful message to the children of Mykolaiv:
You do not have to be a champion to be important.
You do not have to win to have value.
You have the right to participate.
You belong.

EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT.
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE 2026–2036
The MoU establishes the EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE 2026–2036 programme as a central long-term framework for cooperation.
The programme is intended for children, young people, families, schools, sports organisations and communities affected by the war and its consequences. Within the programme, activities may include the development of physical education programmes, training for coaches and Assistant Coaches, FAIR PLAY Team clubs, MOVEMENT & HEART – Rukh i Sertse / Рух і Серце activities, family physical activity, inclusive events, youth participation, research, training, international cooperation and physical-education initiatives related to reconstruction.
The objective is therefore not to organise isolated events, but to build a long-term operating model for 2026–2036.
YOUNG PEOPLE AS BUILDERS OF THE FUTURE
One of the significant future opportunities of the cooperation is to train young people for Assistant Coach roles.
The planned training may include children's physical education, physical literacy, FAIR PLAY principles, children's rights, leadership, communication, teamwork, inclusion, safe physical activity and practical coaching experience under adult supervision. At the same time, the objective is to develop young people's responsibility, leadership and future professional capabilities.
This reflects an important long-term idea of the cooperation:
Ukrainian young people are not only recipients of assistance. They can also be builders of the future of their own society.

When a young person is given education, responsibility, skills and an opportunity to help younger children, local expertise, leadership and the future of the community are built at the same time.
MYKOLAIV CAN BECOME A MODEL FOR UKRAINE MORE BROADLY
The strategic cooperation begins with a strong practical focus on Mykolaiv and Southern Ukraine, but the agreement also enables cooperation to be developed later elsewhere in Ukraine.
The MoU also outlines an initial three-year framework that could combine coach education, Assistant Coach training, FAIR PLAY Team clubs, the MOVEMENT & HEART programme, family physical activity, inclusion, children's rights, and research and evaluation.
The aim would be to develop and test an evidence-based, sustainable operating model. If the results are positive and measurable, expansion of the model to other regions of Ukraine can be assessed.
In this way, Mykolaiv can serve not only as a location for activities, but also as a place where expertise and future models of physical education are developed for a Ukraine recovering from war.
CHILDREN'S SAFETY AND HUMAN DIGNITY FIRST
The cooperation agreement also establishes a very clear ethical boundary:
the safety, dignity and rights of children must always come first.
Activities must comply with the principles of child safeguarding, supervision, informed consent, privacy, data protection, non-discrimination, accessibility and research ethics. No programme-related, research, communications, sporting or financial objective may take precedence over a child's safety and human dignity.
This principle is critically important, particularly in war and crisis conditions.
A SHARED STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP – A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FUTURE
This MoU brings together two important strengths: Ukrainian local expertise and the network connected with the Olympic movement, together with E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy's development of international physical education, education, research and cooperation.
The agreement specifically aims to combine international expertise with strong Ukrainian capacity for practical implementation.
At the same time, the cooperation can build connections with schools, sports clubs, coaches, physical education professionals, young athletes, municipalities, regional actors, civil society organisations, universities, researchers, and European and international partners.
This makes the signed MoU more than a declaration of cooperation.
It provides a foundation for shared strategic work for the benefit of children and young people
THANK YOU TO MYKOLAIV – AND TO EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES IN CHILDREN'S FUTURE
European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry expresses its warm and profound gratitude to the Mykolaiv Regional Branch of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and its head, Dmytro Volodymyrovych Falko, for their trust and for concluding this significant strategic cooperation agreement.
Special thanks also go to E.C.Y.P.E.-Academyry's official Regional Coordinator in Ukraine, Anatolii Bugaiev, who has supported the practical development of the cooperation.
Our thanks equally go to all teachers, coaches, sports actors, schools, families, volunteers and cooperation partners in Mykolaiv who, despite difficult circumstances, continue to build the future of children and young people.
War can destroy buildings and sports facilities.
It must not be allowed to destroy a child's right to move.
It must not be allowed to destroy a child's right to learn.
It must not be allowed to destroy friendship.
It must not be allowed to destroy the spirit of FAIR PLAY.
And it must not be allowed to destroy a child's belief in the future.

This is why cooperation is needed right now – and why it will continue to be needed long after the war has ended.
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT.
RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS.
MOVEMENT & HEART.
FAIR PLAY.
FROM MYKOLAIV TOWARDS A STRONGER FUTURE FOR UKRAINE'S CHILDREN.

NEW STRATEGIC COOPERATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE AFFECTED BY WAR
European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry and Mishkovo-Pohorilove Regional Academic Lyceum “Inhulskyi” establish cooperation in education, physical education, youth development and international projects
Mykolaiv Region, Ukraine / Finland – 27 August 2026
The European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry, Finland, and the Municipal Institution “Mishkovo-Pohorilove Regional Academic Lyceum ‘Inhulskyi’ of the Mykolaiv Regional Council”, Ukraine, have concluded a significant Memorandum of Understanding establishing a framework for strategic cooperation in education, physical education, youth development and international projects.
The cooperation has particular significance because the children and young people concerned are living with the consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine. Students from the Kherson region have come to the Mykolaiv area, where conditions are considerably safer for their education and everyday life. The Lyceum therefore has a particularly important role in providing educational continuity and a community for children whose lives and schooling have been affected by war and displacement.
This information concerning the students' origin in the Kherson region is additional information provided by E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry and is not stated in the text of the signed MoU itself.
The Memorandum explicitly recognises the circumstances of children and young people affected by war, disruption of education, displacement, damage to educational and sports infrastructure and other consequences of the war in Ukraine. It establishes cooperation based on children's rights, equality, inclusion, Fair Play, transparency and responsible international partnership.
CHILDREN NEED MORE THAN SURVIVAL — THEY NEED A FUTURE
War changes the world around a child, but it must never be allowed to take away the child's right to develop.
A child needs education. A child needs movement. A child needs friends. A child needs participation. A child needs safety. A child needs hope.
Physical education has a particularly important role in this environment. It is not simply sport, competition or physical exercise. Well-planned physical education can create opportunities for children and young people to experience participation, belonging, cooperation, success and normal everyday life.
The new cooperation therefore seeks to increase access to quality education, physical education and sport; strengthen opportunities for children and young people affected by war; develop youth participation and leadership; support teachers, coaches and educational professionals; and promote the fundamental rights, dignity and well-being of children and young people.
The MoU gives special attention to inclusive physical education and sport, community-based physical activity, education through sport, Fair Play, children's participation, family physical activity and activities supporting children's physical, psychological and social well-being. Importantly, the agreement also explicitly includes opportunities for children with disabilities and children requiring additional support.
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT IN UKRAINE 2026–2036
The partnership can become an important part of the Academy's long-term EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE – 2026–2036 framework.
Under the signed Memorandum, possible cooperation includes physical education programmes, youth education, coach and assistant-coach education, inclusive physical activity, FAIR PLAY Team activities, MOVEMENT & HEART – Rukh i Sertse, family physical education, youth participation, research and evaluation, training, seminars, pilot programmes, educational materials, international cooperation, and activities supporting recovery and reconstruction.
This gives the cooperation a purpose extending far beyond individual sporting events.
The objective is to help build a sustainable environment in which children and young people can move, learn, participate, develop and belong — including children whose childhood has been disrupted by war.
 RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS
At the heart of the cooperation is a principle that cannot be compromised:
THE SAFETY, DIGNITY AND RIGHTS OF CHILDREN MUST ALWAYS COME FIRST.
This principle is expressly incorporated into the Memorandum. Activities involving children and young people are to follow appropriate safeguarding, adult-supervision, child-protection, informed-consent, privacy, data-protection, non-discrimination and accessibility principles. The Parties also seek equal opportunities for girls and boys, children with disabilities, children requiring additional support and children from different social backgrounds.
For children affected by war, children's rights cannot be postponed until peace returns.
The right to education cannot wait.
The right to movement cannot wait.
The right to participation cannot wait.
The right to development cannot wait.
Childhood cannot wait.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AS PART OF RECOVERY AND RECONSTRUCTION
Ukraine's reconstruction will eventually require enormous investment in buildings, schools, sports facilities and infrastructure.
But reconstruction is also about people.
It is about children growing into healthy young adults. It is about rebuilding communities and social relationships. It is about teachers and coaches having the knowledge and resources to support young people. And it is about ensuring that children who have experienced displacement and disruption are given meaningful opportunities to participate again.
For this reason, the partners also envisage cooperation with universities and researchers in areas including children's and young people's well-being, physical literacy, physical activity, youth participation, inclusion, leadership, social interaction and the development of safe physical education approaches in crisis and recovery environments.
FROM MYKOLAIV TO EUROPE — BUILDING INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
The partnership also opens possibilities for wider European and international cooperation.
The Academy will seek opportunities to identify relevant European and international funding programmes, foundations and donors; contribute to project development; build international partnerships; and facilitate connections with universities, research institutions, educational organisations and sports organisations. The Lyceum will contribute its understanding of local needs, target groups and practical implementation in Ukraine.
The organisations may also develop cooperation with European and Ukrainian institutions, universities, schools, sports organisations, National Olympic organisations and sports federations, municipalities, NGOs, foundations and international organisations.
This combination is particularly important: local Ukrainian knowledge and responsibility must remain at the centre, while European and international cooperation can bring additional expertise, networks, research and resources.
Indeed, the Memorandum specifically recognises that sustainable international cooperation should strengthen Ukrainian capacity rather than replace it.
A PARTNERSHIP BUILT ON FAIR PLAY, HUMANITY AND HOPE
The educational philosophy behind the cooperation is closely connected with the EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT initiative, founded by Timo Virtanen in Finland on 21 August 1995.
Its principles incorporated into the MoU include children's rights, equality, participation, physical education, inclusion, Fair Play, friendship, respect, community and international cooperation.
In Ukraine today, these are not abstract values.
FAIR PLAY means that nobody is left outside.
It means recognising the child before the athlete, human dignity before performance, participation before exclusion, and cooperation before division.
THANK YOU FOR BUILDING THIS BRIDGE FOR CHILDREN
The European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry expresses its sincere gratitude to Acting Director Dmytro Vasylovych Tytarenko, the leadership and staff of the Mishkovo-Pohorilove Regional Academic Lyceum “Inhulskyi”, and everyone who has contributed to making this cooperation possible. The signed agreement identifies Dmytro Vasylovych Tytarenko as the Lyceum's Acting Director and representative.
Special appreciation is also extended to Anatolii Bugaiev, Official Regional Coordinator for Ukraine of European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry, for his continuing work in Ukraine, development of local partnerships, coordination and practical cooperation. His coordinating role in Ukraine is expressly recognised in the Memorandum.
Every new partnership is another bridge.
A bridge between Ukraine and Europe.
A bridge between education and physical education.
A bridge between children affected by war and the opportunities they deserve.
And, above all, a bridge between the difficulties of today and the possibilities of tomorrow.
The Parties have expressed the spirit of their cooperation in the Memorandum in seven words:
EDUCATION – PHYSICAL EDUCATION – CHILDREN'S RIGHTS – FAIR PLAY – INCLUSION – COOPERATION – HOPE
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT.

RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS.

THANK YOU FOR THE 31ST ANNIVERSARY CONGRATULATIONS

              EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT          21 August 1995 – 21 August 2026

Dear Friends, Partners, Colleagues and Supporters,
On behalf of the European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who remembered us and sent congratulations, greetings and messages of encouragement on the 31st anniversary of the EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT project on 21 August 2026.

Your messages mean a great deal to us.
Thirty-one years is a long journey. During that time, countries, organisations, generations and circumstances have changed, but the fundamental principle behind our work has remained the same:
                                                EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT.

It all began in Finland on 21 August 1995The EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT physical education project was founded by Timo Virtanen in Finland on 21 August 1995.
Its beginnings were closely connected with Fair Play, football and the right of children with disabilities to participate in physical activity.

In 1995, representatives of Finnish football and disability-sport organisations came together to consider how regular football activities could be made available to children with disabilities. A Fair Play Football School for children with disabilities and visual impairments was subsequently organised at the Tali Football Hall in Helsinki.
By 1996, the FinnPa Fair Play Team already had 21 enthusiastic players aged between 8 and 21. (EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT)
The principle was simple but powerful:

A disability should not exclude a child from sport.
Every child should have an opportunity to participate, experience joy, make friends, learn and feel that they are a valued member of a team.

The project's history records the words of Timo Virtanen:
“All of this must happen on the terms of the children and youth.” (EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT)
That principle remains relevant 31 years later.

Read the history of EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT

From disability sport to a wider international mission
During the project's early years, Timo Virtanen worked extensively in disability sport. He served as Head Coach of the Finland Deaf Men's National Football Team, founded Finland's first disability football school for children and young people, and later served as Head Coach of the Finnish Women's National Goalball Team. His coaching history includes European Championship gold in 1997 and World Championship gold in 1998. (EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT)

The philosophy developed through practical experience with children, young people, athletes, coaches and families:
See the person before the disability.
See the child before the limitation.
And give everyone a meaningful opportunity to participate.

The project's international humanitarian work began in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1998–1999, including cooperation with the United Nations and NATO/SFOR. It later continued in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2020, with activities involving sports and educational materials, school events, sports festivals and community support. (EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT)

The project's history has therefore developed from football and disability sport into physical education, inclusion, humanitarian cooperation and work for children and young people living in crisis and conflict environments. (EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT)

The next chapter is Ukraine
Today, the work continues through the Finnish non-profit organisation European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry and our Ukrainian cooperation partners.
On 24 January 2026 – the United Nations International Day of Education – EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE 2026–2036 was launched as a new ten-year chapter of this long history. (EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT)

Our objective is not to create a short-term campaign.
We want to build long-term cooperation with our Ukrainian partners, particularly in Mykolaiv and Kherson, supporting children and young people through physical education, participation, inclusion, Fair Play, education and research.

Our work includes the development of initiatives such as FAIR PLAY Team Physical Education Clubs, MOVEMENT & HEART – Rukh i Sertse, Assistant Coach Education, Family Physical Education and PEACE THROUGH PLAYS, alongside cooperation with schools, sports and educational institutions, civil-society organisations and other Ukrainian partners.

The same philosophy that began on a football field in Finland in 1995 therefore continues in Ukraine in 2026:
Every child has the right to participate.
Every child has the right to move and play.
Every child has the right to education, safety, dignity and hope.

Thank you for walking this journey with us
To everyone who has participated in, supported, encouraged or believed in EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT during these 31 years – thank you.
Thank you to the children and young people.
Thank you to their families.
Thank you to the athletes, coaches, teachers and educators.
Thank you to our Ukrainian partners and our international cooperation network.
Thank you to everyone who sent us anniversary congratulations on 21 August 2026.

And especially to those working with children under extraordinarily difficult circumstances in Ukraine: your courage, commitment and friendship remind us why this work must continue.
The world has changed enormously since 21 August 1995.
Our responsibility has grown with it.
But our message remains unchanged:

EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT
RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS
FAIR PLAY

Let us continue together.
For the children of today.
For the children whose lives have been changed by war and crisis.

And for the generations that will follow us.
With our deepest gratitude, respect and warmest wishes,
Timo Virtanen

 SIX MONTHS TO SAY
“WE WILL NOT EVEN EVALUATE IT”:
 E.C.Y.P.E.-ACADEMY RY QUESTIONS EU BUREAUCRACY
WHILE CHILDREN IN UKRAINE CONTINUE TO LIVE UNDER WAR

Picture
Picture

PEACE through PLAYS was designed to protect children's right to play, physical activity, inclusion and wellbeing in war-affected Ukraine — yet the proposal never reached substantive evaluation. Finland / Mykolaiv, Ukraine – 10 August 2026
The European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry is publicly questioning the European Union's handling of its PEACE through PLAYS – Peer Education And Community Empowerment through Physical Literacy And Youth Sport proposal.
The question we are asking is simple:
How can European bureaucracy become more important than examining a proposal designed to support children and young people living in a war zone?
The Concept Note was submitted for the European Commission's EU4CSOs in Ukraine – Call for Proposals 2025, Lot 5: Youth, by the deadline of 29 January 2026.
On 3 August 2026, more than six months after the submission deadline, E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry received the European Commission's decision.
The Commission stated:
“The requested EU contribution (amount) is lower than the minimum allowed in section 1.3 of the guidelines.”
For that reason, according to the official letter, the Concept Note “could not be considered further” under the call.
In practical terms, the substantive educational and humanitarian merits of PEACE through PLAYS did not proceed to evaluation.
That is precisely what we find so difficult to accept.
€50,000 STOOD BETWEEN THE APPLICATION AND EVALUATION
Our intention was to build a €1,000,000 programme, structured around an anticipated €950,000 EU contribution and €50,000 in co-financing.
That €50,000 contribution was considered realistically achievable by our organisation.
The application was prepared with substantial expert input, including the work of our official adviser, Professor Caterina Pesce, who strongly supported the development of the proposal according to the applicable application framework.
Yet after approximately six months of waiting, the project did not reach substantive evaluation because of the amount requested from the EU.
We respect the necessity of rules in public funding.
We understand that European funding programmes require eligibility criteria, financial thresholds and equal administrative treatment of applicants.
But respecting rules does not prevent us from asking a fundamental question:
Is this really how Europe should respond to organisations trying to defend children's rights in a country at war?
 WHAT WAS NOT SUBSTANTIVELY EVALUATED?
This was not simply a proposal to organise sports events.
The submitted Concept Note described a three-year programme in Ukraine designed around children's right to play and physical activity, youth participation, peer education, inclusion, psychosocial wellbeing and community resilience.
Its objective was to involve adolescent athletes as peer educators for younger children while training sports coaches to support those young peer educators.
The programme proposed three interconnected stages:
Year 1 – Co-creation, Co-design and Co-production
Developing the educational framework, identifying needs and creating training materials together with relevant stakeholders.
Year 2 – Coach and Peer Educator Training and Pilot Implementation
Training coaches and adolescent athletes, followed by practical activities in which trained young people would help lead physical activity and multisport games for younger children.
Year 3 – Scaling-up and Evaluation
Evaluating outcomes, including youth leadership, psychosocial skills and children's physical literacy, and developing a sustainable model capable of continuing beyond the funding period.
These were the ideas waiting behind an administrative threshold.
Picture
THIS IS ABOUT CHILDREN LIVING THROUGH WAR
The Concept Note described the extraordinary circumstances facing children and young people in the Mykolaiv region.
It reported extensive destruction of places where children previously played, exercised and participated in sport, while schools have had to adapt to hybrid education, shelters and underground learning because of continuing security risks.
The proposal specifically sought to expand opportunities for participation in sport, including strategies for children and young people with disabilities and equal opportunities for girls, while creating safe and inclusive environments in which younger children could exercise their fundamental right to play.
This matters.
Because behind every funding application number there are human beings.
  • There are children.
  • There are families.
  • There are teachers.
  • There are coaches.
  • There are young people growing up while missiles, alarms, destroyed infrastructure and uncertainty form part of everyday life.
CHILDREN'S RIGHTS CANNOT WAIT SIX MONTHS FOR BUREAUCRACY.
And children's rights should never become invisible behind an administrative technicality.
THE EUROPEAN UNION ITSELF RECOGNISES THESE RIGHTS
There is a particularly painful contradiction here.
Our own proposal explicitly connected PEACE through PLAYS with the EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child, the EU's youth policies and international recognition of children's right to play.
The Concept Note stated that children's right to play is recognised in Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and proposed empowering Ukrainian young people themselves to help protect that right through peer education and sport.
The programme was also designed to include monitoring, evaluation, accountability, gender-sensitive approaches and conflict-sensitive data collection.
So we respectfully ask the European institutions:
Where is the human perspective in European funding bureaucracy?
How can we speak internationally about children's rights while allowing potentially valuable work for children in a war zone to stop at an administrative threshold without substantive evaluation?
And why did an administrative eligibility decision take more than six months after the submission deadline to communicate?
These are legitimate questions.
They deserve answers.
WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT
E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry is not asking the European Union to abandon its rules.
We are not asking for preferential treatment.
We are asking for proportionality, clarity, efficiency and humanity.
If an application fails an objective financial eligibility threshold, applicants working in urgent humanitarian circumstances should reasonably be able to expect such an issue to be identified and communicated without an extraordinary delay.
Six months is a long time for an organisation.
For a child growing up during war, six months can be an eternity.
Picture
THE PROJECT ITSELF EXPLAINS WHY ACTION IS NEEDED
According to the submitted Concept Note, approximately 1,000 young athletes across eight sports clubs were envisaged within the Mykolaiv regional implementation environment.
The proposal described extremely restricted access to functioning sports facilities and explained how destruction and security conditions have reduced opportunities for children and adolescents to participate safely in physical activity.
And the intended beneficiaries were clear:
children and young people.
The intended outcomes were equally clear:
safe physical activity, inclusion, leadership, resilience, belonging, peer education and children's right to play.
These are not abstract concepts.
They concern the everyday lives of Ukrainian children.
 WE WILL NOT GIVE UP
The European Commission's decision does not end our work.
It strengthens our determination to find another way.
The EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT initiative began on 21 August 1995 with a fundamental conviction that remains unchanged more than three decades later:
Picture
Picture
 EVERY CHILD IS IMPORTANT.
Today, that principle guides EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE.
We will continue building cooperation with schools, sports organisations, educational institutions, researchers and local partners in Ukraine.
We will continue searching for foundations, companies, international organisations and responsible private partners willing to support evidence-based physical education for children affected by war and crisis.
And we will continue asking European decision-makers an uncomfortable but necessary question:
When bureaucracy and the rights of children living through war collide, which one should Europe place first?
Our answer is unequivocal.
THE CHILD.
Every time.
 RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS

Children did not start this war.
Children should not have to pay its price.
Their right to education, movement, play, participation, wellbeing and hope cannot be postponed by bureaucracy.
 WE WILL NOT GIVE UP.

EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT.

RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS.

 OPEN LETTER 10.07.2026
TO THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE,
IOC PRESIDENT KIRSTY COVENTRY, ALL IOC MEMBERS, THE GLOBAL OLYMPIC MOVEMENT
AND
ALL NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES
UKRAINIAN CHILDREN MUST NOT DIE
WHILE THE DOOR IS REOPENED FOR RUSSIA
TO RETURN TO INTERNATIONAL SPORT

RESPECT CHILDREN RIGHTS
Picture
To Ms Kirsty Coventry
President of the International Olympic Committee

To all Members of the International Olympic Committee
To all National Olympic Committees
To all leaders, representatives and decision-makers of the Olympic Movement throughout the world
Dear President Kirsty Coventry,
Distinguished Members of the International Olympic Committee,
Distinguished Presidents and Representatives of National Olympic Committees,
Distinguished Leaders of the Olympic Movement throughout the world,

I write this public letter as President of the Board of the European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry.
I write as a defender of physical education.
I write on behalf of children and young people whose voices cannot be heard loudly enough through the bombing, explosions, air-raid sirens and terror of war to reach the meeting rooms where the leaders of world sport make their decisions.
Picture
I write for the children of Ukraine.
I write for the young people of Ukraine.
I write for orphaned children and young people who have lost a parent, a family member or another loved one.
I write for the athletes, coaches, teachers, physical educators, families and communities whose lives have been shattered and transformed by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

And today, I put a direct question to the International Olympic Committee and to the entire international Olympic Movement:

HOW LONG MUST THE CHILDREN OF UKRAINE PAY WITH THEIR LIVES, THEIR HEALTH, THEIR SAFETY AND THEIR FUTURE BEFORE THE LEADERS OF WORLD SPORT UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS NOT MERELY A QUESTION OF SPORTS POLICY?
Picture
  • This is about human life.
  • This is about children’s rights.
  • This is about the future of young people.
  • This is about the right to move.
  • This is about the right to participate in sport.
  • This is about the right to education.
  • This is about the right of children and young people to attend sports schools, physical education institutions, sports colleges and other educational institutions in their own country without fearing that the next missile, drone or bomb may strike a school, sports hall, stadium, training ground, residential building or another civilian site.
  • This is about the right to live.
Picture
A UKRAINIAN CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN SPORTA
Ukrainian child has exactly the same human dignity as a Finnish child, a French child, a German child, an American child, an African child, an Asian child or any other child anywhere in the world.
  • A Ukrainian child has the right to run.
  • The right to play football.
  • The right to swim.
  • The right to practise athletics.
  • The right to do gymnastics.
  • The right to train.
  • The right to participate in physical education.
  • The right to belong to a team.
  • The right to find friendship through sport.
  • The right to study sport and physical education.
  • The right to dream of the Olympic Games.
  • The right to dream of becoming a coach.
  • The right to dream of becoming a physical education teacher.
  • The right to build their own future.
And above all:
Picture
A UKRAINIAN CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO
RETURN HOME ALIVE FROM TRAINING.
This should be so self-evident that it should never need to be written in a public letter to the most powerful institutions of world sport.
But today, it must be written.
RUSSIA’S WAR DOES NOT ONLY DESTROY BUILDINGS — IT DESTROYS CHILDREN’S FUTURES
Russia’s war against Ukraine has caused immense human suffering.
Bombardments and attacks have damaged and destroyed civilian sites.
  • Homes.
  • Schools.
  • Educational institutions.
  • Sports facilities.
  • Stadiums.
  • Training environments.
  • Cities.
  • Villages.
  • Entire communities.
Picture
Children, young people and adults have been killed and injured.
Ukraine’s sporting community has also lost athletes, coaches and other people who dedicated their lives to sport.
Behind every person killed, there is a name.
  • A family.
  • A mother.
  • A father.
  • A child.
  • A friend.
  • A team.
  • A coach.
  • A student.
  • A school.
  • A sports club.
  • A community.
Picture
  • When an athlete dies in war, we do not lose merely another name in a statistic.
  • We lose a human being.
  • When a coach dies, children lose an adult who taught them, encouraged them and believed in them.
  • When a physical education teacher dies, a school loses an educator.
  • When a young athlete dies, the world loses a future we will never be allowed to witness.
  • When a child dies, no medal, no competition, no ceremony and no diplomatic explanation can bring that child back.
AS PRESIDENT OF E.C.Y.P.E.-ACADEMY RY, I DO NOT ACCEPT TERROR AGAINST SPORT, CHILDREN OR CIVILIANS
The European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry states its position without ambiguity:
Picture
  • I DO NOT ACCEPT TERROR AGAINST CIVILIANS.
  • I DO NOT ACCEPT TERROR AGAINST CHILDREN.
  • I DO NOT ACCEPT TERROR AGAINST YOUNG PEOPLE.
  • I DO NOT ACCEPT ATTACKS AGAINST CIVILIAN SITES.
  • I DO NOT ACCEPT THE DESTRUCTION OF SPORT, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, EDUCATION AND CHILDREN’S FUTURES.
  • I DO NOT ACCEPT THE NORMALISATION, THROUGH INTERNATIONAL SPORT, OF THE SUFFERING CAUSED BY RUSSIA’S WAR AGAINST UKRAINE.
Sport must never become a machine for moral laundering.
The Olympic Games and international sport must never provide a stage through which a state system connected to a war of aggression can rebuild international legitimacy while Ukrainian children continue to live under air-raid alerts.
This contradiction cannot be hidden behind flags.
It cannot be solved by changing symbols on a competition uniform.
It cannot be erased by the word “neutral.”
NEUTRALITY MUST NOT BECOME A PATH TO ESCAPING RESPONSIBILITY
We ask the International Olympic Committee:
  • What does neutrality mean to a child whose school has been damaged?
  • What does neutrality mean to a young athlete whose training facilities have been destroyed?
  • What does neutrality mean to a family that has buried a child?
  • What does neutrality mean to an athlete who has lost a coach?
  • What does neutrality mean to a coach whose student will never again arrive for training?
  • What does neutrality mean to the Ukrainian sporting community forced to live amid war, death, injury, displacement, fear and destruction?
Picture
  • NEUTRALITY MUST NOT BECOME INDIFFERENCE.
  • NEUTRALITY MUST NOT BECOME FORGETTING.
  • NEUTRALITY MUST NOT BECOME A SYSTEM THROUGH WHICH RESPONSIBILITY IS EVADED.
  • A NEUTRAL FLAG DOES NOT ERASE DEAD CHILDREN.
  • A NEUTRAL SYMBOL DOES NOT REBUILD A DESTROYED SPORTS FACILITY.NEUTRAL STATUS DOES NOT BRING A DEAD ATHLETE BACK TO LIFE.
I DEMAND THE EXCLUSION OF RUSSIA FROM INTERNATIONAL SPORT

As President of the Board of the European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry, I call in the strongest possible terms for Russia to be excluded from international sporting competition for as long as genuine accountability has not been achieved.
I state clearly that a return to normal participation in the international sporting community cannot be morally accepted until:
Picture
  1. Russia’s war against Ukraine has ended in a just manner consistent with the principles of international law.
  2. Appropriate, independent investigations into serious crimes committed in and against Ukraine have been carried out.
  3. Those responsible for war crimes and other violations of international law have been subjected to appropriate legal proceedings.
  4. Those who knowingly enabled, facilitated or materially supported serious acts against civilians and civilian sites are held accountable in accordance with law.
  5. The suffering of Ukraine’s children, young people, athletes, coaches, teachers and physical educators is no longer pushed aside for the convenience of international sports politics.
  6. Responsibility for the destruction and reconstruction of damaged schools, sports facilities, stadiums, physical activity spaces and training environments is addressed seriously.
  7. The international sporting community recognises that the destruction of Ukrainian sport is not a secondary issue, but part of the enormous human and societal damage caused by this war.
Let there be no misunderstanding:
  • THERE CAN BE NO MORAL RETURN TO “BUSINESS AS USUAL” WHILE ACCOUNTABILITY IS ABSENT.
  • THERE CAN BE NO NORMALISATION WITHOUT JUSTICE.
  • THERE CAN BE NO CONVENIENT AMNESIA WHILE UKRAINIAN FAMILIES ARE STILL BURYING THEIR DEAD.
THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE CANNOT LOOK THE OTHER WAY
The International Olympic Committee has enormous influence.
But influence brings responsibility.
  • The Olympic Movement speaks of peace.
  • The Olympic Movement speaks of respect.
  • The Olympic Movement speaks of friendship.
  • The Olympic Movement speaks of human dignity.
  • The Olympic Movement speaks of youth.
  • The Olympic Movement speaks of the future.
Now these words must be proven through action.
Picture
  • PEACE IS NOT A CEREMONY.
  • PEACE IS NOT A SLOGAN.PEACE IS NOT A MARKETING CAMPAIGN.
  • PEACE IS NOT A BEAUTIFUL IMAGE OF THE OLYMPIC FLAME ON TELEVISION.
  • Peace means that a child does not have to fear a missile.
  • Peace means that a young person can go to training.
  • Peace means that a coach can teach.
  • Peace means that a physical education teacher can open the door of a school gymnasium.
  • Peace means that an athlete can train without first checking the location of the nearest bomb shelter.
If the Olympic Movement truly stands for peace, then it must have the courage to stand with the victims of war.
PRESIDENT KIRSTY COVENTRY — HISTORY WILL JUDGE THE DECISIONS MADE UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP

Madam President,
You now hold one of the most influential positions in world sport.
Your decisions, your leadership and your moral courage will reach far beyond stadiums and Olympic arenas.
The children of Ukraine do not need carefully balanced words that disappear after a press conference.
They need the leaders of world sport to understand what is at stake.
They need the Olympic Movement to recognise that their right to life, education, movement, physical education and sport cannot be separated from decisions about international sporting legitimacy.
Madam President, I ask you directly:
Picture
WHAT MESSAGE DOES THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT SEND TO A UKRAINIAN CHILD IF RUSSIA IS GRADUALLY RETURNED TO INTERNATIONAL SPORT BEFORE GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY HAS BEEN ACHIEVED?
  • What message does it send to a child whose sports hall has been destroyed?
  • What message does it send to a young athlete who trains under air-raid sirens?
  • What message does it send to the family of a dead athlete?
  • What message does it send to the children of a coach who will never return home?
  • What message does it send to an orphaned child who has lost a parent or loved one?
The world is watching.
Ukraine is watching.
The international sporting community is watching.
And history will remember.
I APPEAL TO EVERY NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE
This letter is not addressed only to the International Olympic Committee.
It is addressed to every National Olympic Committee.
To every President.
To every Board Member.
To every sports leader.
To every decision-maker.
I ask you:
WHERE DO YOU STAND?
  • Do you stand with the right of a Ukrainian child to live?
  • Do you stand with the young athlete?
  • Do you stand with the child whose school has been bombed?
  • Do you stand with the family of a dead coach?
  • Do you stand with children trying to rebuild their lives amid war?
  • Do you stand with orphaned children and young people who have lost parents and loved ones?
Picture
Or will you gradually accept a situation in which international sport returns to normal while Ukraine’s suffering continues?
History will remember your decisions.
History will remember your silence.
History will remember your compromises.
History will also remember your courage — if you choose to act.
CHILDREN’S RIGHTS ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE
At the heart of our organisation’s work are children, young people, physical education, education, safety, participation and human dignity.
Our starting point is simple:
  • A CHILD’S RIGHT TO LIFE IS NOT A POLITICAL OPINION.
  • A CHILD’S RIGHT TO EDUCATION IS NOT A POLITICAL OPINION.
  • A CHILD’S RIGHT TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS NOT A POLITICAL OPINION.
  • A CHILD’S RIGHT TO SAFETY IS NOT A POLITICAL OPINION.
  • A CHILD’S RIGHT TO A FUTURE IS NOT A POLITICAL OPINION.
These are fundamental questions of human dignity.
Picture
The children and young people of Ukraine have the right to participate in sport in their own country.
  • They have the right to attend sports schools.
  • They have the right to study physical education.
  • They have the right to attend sports colleges and institutions of physical education.
  • They have the right to train as coaches.
  • They have the right to become teachers.
  • They have the right to build the future of Ukraine.
  • They have the right to train.
  • They have the right to compete.
  • They have the right to dream.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS PART OF THE RECONSTRUCTION OF UKRAINE

At the European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry, we know that physical education in wartime is not a luxury. It is part of survival.
It is part of community.
It is part of children’s well-being.
It is part of rebuilding a sense of safety.
It is part of social reconstruction.
It is part of hope.
Picture
For a child traumatised by war, safe movement, a safe group, a safe coach and a safe physical education teacher can mean more than the world understands.
  • A ball can be more than a ball.
  • A team can be more than a team.
  • A training session can be more than a training session.
  • A coach can be more than a coach.
  • A physical education lesson can be the moment when a child is allowed to feel like a child again.

That is why destroying sports facilities is not merely the destruction of concrete.
Destroying a stadium is not merely damaging a building.
Destroying a school sports hall is not merely a material loss.
Such destruction also damages a community’s ability to help children recover.
  • It destroys places of belonging.
  • It destroys routines that create safety.
  • It destroys pathways to education.
  • It destroys opportunities for young people.
  • It destroys spaces where trauma can begin to give way to trust.
This is why physical education must be recognised as part of Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
I DEMAND JUSTICE
I do not ask the International Olympic Committee for pity.
I DEMAND JUSTICE.
I do not ask for beautiful words.
I DEMAND ACTION.
I do not ask for ceremonial sympathy.
I DEMAND MORAL LEADERSHIP.

I do not accept that Ukraine’s dead children, young people, athletes and coaches become footnotes in the documents of international sports politics.
  • I do not accept that the world grows tired.
  • I do not accept that suffering becomes normal.
  • I do not accept that the passage of time erases responsibility.
Picture
EVERY DEAD CHILD IS ONE CHILD TOO MANY
  • One dead child is one too many.
  • One dead young person is one too many.
  • One killed athlete is one too many.
  • One killed coach is one too many.
  • One bombed school is one too many.
  • One destroyed sports facility is one too many.
  • One child forced to abandon sport because of war is one too many.
  • One child afraid to go to training is one too many.
  • One child whose Olympic dream ends in a bombing is one too many.
Picture
TO THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, I PUT ONE FINAL QUESTION

The next time Russia’s participation in international sport is discussed, do not look only at documents.
  • Do not look only at regulations.
  • Do not look only at broadcasting rights.
  • Do not look only at sponsors.
  • Do not look only at competition calendars.
  • Look at a Ukrainian child.
  • Look at the child who wants to run.
  • Look at the child who wants to play.
  • Look at the child who wants to go to school.
  • Look at the child who wants to train.
  • Look at the child who wants to live.
And ask yourselves:

WHAT DOES THE OLYMPIC IDEAL MEAN IF WE DO NOT HAVE THE COURAGE TO DEFEND EVEN A CHILD’S RIGHT TO LIFE, MOVEMENT, EDUCATION AND A FUTURE?
My position as President of the Board is clear.
  • I stand with the children of Ukraine.
  • I stand with the young people of Ukraine.
  • I stand with Ukraine’s athletes.
  • I stand with Ukraine’s coaches.
  • I stand with Ukraine’s teachers and physical educators.
  • I stand with families who have lost loved ones.
  • I stand with orphaned children and young people who have lost parents and family members.
  • I stand with those children who, despite everything, still dare to dream.
Picture
UKRAINIAN CHILDREN MUST NOT DIE
WHILE WORLD SPORT DECIDES TO RESTORE RUSSIA TO NORMAL PARTICIPATION IN THE INTERNATIONAL SPORTING COMMUNITY.
  • NOT BEFORE ACCOUNTABILITY.
  • NOT BEFORE JUSTICE.
  • NOT BEFORE THE RULE OF LAW.
  • NOT BEFORE THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR WAR CRIMES AND OTHER SERIOUS VIOLATIONS FACE PROPER LEGAL PROCEEDINGS.
  • NO FORGETTING.
  • NO INDIFFERENCE.
  • NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF CHILDREN.

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GLOBAL INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION INITIATIVE LAUNCHED
TO DEFEND CHILDREN’S RIGHTS, SAFETY, AND FUTURE
European and International Organizations Unite to
Support Children in War, Crisis, and Disaster Regions
At a time when millions of children across Europe and the world are living under the impacts of war, violence, displacement, poverty, earthquakes, humanitarian crises, and fear, two international organizations have launched a historic strategic cooperation initiative to defend children’s rights, dignity, well-being, and future.
The European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E. Academy ry and the World Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – C.Y.P.E. Academy have officially signed a Strategic International Cooperation Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a long-term global framework for protecting and supporting children and youth affected by crisis conditions.
The cooperation initiative combines:
  • children’s rights advocacy
  • physical education
  • trauma rehabilitation
  • humanitarian action
  • education
  • research and development
  • psychological support
  • community-based recovery
  • and international cooperation
into one unified international operational model for children and youth.
A GLOBAL CALL TO DEFEND CHILDREN’S RIGHTS

The organizations strongly emphasize that the rights of children, as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), continue to be violated across the world — including by states and actors that are themselves members of the United Nations.
The Parties declare that:
“Children must never become victims of political failure, war, violence, or humanitarian neglect.
”
The cooperation agreement calls on governments, institutions, international organizations, humanitarian actors, universities, sponsors, foundations, and global civil society to take stronger responsibility for protecting children.
The organizations stress that:
  • attacks against children, schools, hospitals, and civilian environments are unacceptable
  • children’s rights must be implemented in practice, not only declared in international agreements
  • silence and inaction in the face of violations against children can never be morally acceptable

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AS A TOOL FOR HEALING AND HOPE

The initiative highlights the critical role of physical education, movement, and community activities in helping children recover from trauma caused by war and disasters.
According to the organizations:
Physical education is not only sport — it is rehabilitation, hope, safety, emotional recovery, and rebuilding human dignity.

Research and international experience demonstrate that movement, play, supportive adults, and safe social environments can significantly support children’s:
  • mental recovery
  • physical well-being
  • emotional resilience
  • social inclusion
  • confidence and trust
  • and hope for the future
The organizations aim to develop international programs that combine physical activity, education, psychological support, and humanitarian cooperation for children and families living in crisis conditions.

The cooperation will also support:
  • children in earthquake-affected areas
  • refugee children and families
  • humanitarian crisis regions
  • vulnerable youth communities
  • and areas affected by poverty and social exclusion
The organizations emphasize that children living through war and disasters require not only emergency aid — but also long-term rehabilitation, safe environments, education, community support, and future opportunities.

Historic Moment in Mykolaiv
First
European Children’s Physical Education Day
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE
Brings Joy, Hope, and Safety Amid War.
Mykolaiv city, Ukraine – April 19, 2026

Today marked a historic moment in Mykolaiv city, Ukraine, as the European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy (E.C.Y.P.E. – Academy) ry, in cooperation with the Independent Church of Christians of the Evangelical Faith Bethany and the athletics club MLK MYKOLAIV, organized the very first Children’s Physical Education Day under the European initiative:
“EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE”

The event took place at the Bethany Church courtyard in the city of Mykolaiv starting at 12:00, bringing together several families with children – in total, more than 30 children participated alongside their parents or grandparents.

Movement, Joy, and Togetherness – Every Child Matters

During the day, children moved, ran, and walked along a safe route circling the blue fountain located in the church yard. The route was designed to be accessible for everyone – suitable for small children, strollers, and wheelchair users.
The youngest participant was only 2 years old, carried in his father’s arms as others moved along the route. This touching moment perfectly reflected the message of the day:
Every child is important – regardless of age, circumstances, or ability.
After completing their rounds, each child received a medal and a diploma as a memory of their participation. The most important rule was simple and humane:
Even if a child could not complete seven rounds, they would still receive a medal and diploma – because participation is what truly matters. On this day, however, every child completed the challenge, and each one received their well-earned reward.

A Safe Moment in the Midst of War

The day was exceptional in another way as well.
In war-affected Mykolaiv, not a single air raid alarm sounded during the event. The sky remained calm, and it felt as if the moment itself was protected – for the children, the families, and the entire community.
Only after the families had safely returned home did the air raid alarms begin again.
This made the day even more meaningful – a rare moment of peace, joy, and safety for children living in the shadow of war.
Community, Warmth, and Care

At the end of the event, the Bethany Church cafeteria offered delicious refreshments to the families, and the gathering continued in a warm and caring atmosphere.
The laughter, joy, and excitement of the children filled the courtyard – deeply touching all instructors, coaches, and organizers present.

Physical Education – A Key to Ukraine’s Future

This day was not just an event – it was a powerful message about the future.
Physical education for children and youth is a vital part of Ukraine’s reconstruction.
It provides:
  • opportunities for psychological and physical recovery
  • a space for community, safety, and belonging
  • a pathway to rebuild hope, trust, and the future
As schools, sports facilities, and communities are rebuilt, so too are children’s lives, identities, and belief in tomorrow.

Children’s Rights Must Not Be Lost

Every child has the right to:
  • go to school
  • move, play, and be active
  • feel safe
  • grow and develop
These rights must not disappear in the shadow of war.
Today’s event showed that even in difficult conditions, it is possible to create moments where a child can simply be a child.
A Day That Will Stay in Our Hearts

This historic first Physical Education Day in Mykolaiv was filled with powerful emotions:
joy, relief, gratitude – and above all, hope.
It reminded us all why this work is done:
for the children.

PRESS RELEASE 07.04.2026.
A New Era Begins:
International Partnership Launches Reconstruction of Mykolaiv Central Stadium

Mykolaiv, Ukraine – April 7, 2026
A landmark international cooperation agreement has been officially signed, marking the beginning of a transformative recovery and development effort in the Mykolaiv region. This strategic partnership brings together the European Children’s Youth Physical Education Academy (E.C.Y.P.E.) ry, the NGO Center for Adult Learning and Education “South”, and the Mykolaiv Development Agency.
This agreement is not just a document — it is a commitment to rebuilding hope, opportunity, and the future of Ukrainian youth through sport, education, and international cooperation.
Rebuilding What Was Destroyed: Mykolaiv Central Stadium
At the heart of this partnership lies a project of deep symbolic and practical importance: the full reconstruction of the Mykolaiv Central Stadium
In 2022, a Russian missile strike hit the stadium, leaving devastating damage:
  • a 5-meter-deep and 15-meter-wide crater tore through the running track
  • significant destruction of the stadium stands and infrastructure
This was not just an attack on a building — it was an attack on the community, on youth, and on the future of sport in the region.
From Ruins to Renewal
With the signing of this agreement on April 7, 2026, the reconstruction project is officially launched.

Phase 1: Securing Funding
The immediate priority is to mobilize:
  • international funding
  • European Union programs (including Erasmus+)
  • donor and partner contributions
Phase 2: Construction and Restoration

Following successful fundraising, the project will move into full-scale reconstruction:
  • rebuilding the athletics track and sports facilities
  • restoring and modernizing spectator stands
  • creating a safe, inclusive, and modern sports environment
Why This Matters

The Mykolaiv Central Stadium is not just infrastructure — it is a lifeline.
Sports schools, youth academies, and local sports clubs across the Mykolaiv region urgently need access to proper facilities. Without it, training, development, and community life are severely limited.
This reconstruction will:
  • restore training conditions for hundreds of young athletes
  • support sports education and physical development
  • strengthen community resilience and unity

A Strong International Signal

This partnership sends a clear and powerful message:
Ukraine is rebuilding. Europe is standing together. And the future will be stronger than the past.Through joint efforts in infrastructure, education, and international cooperation, the partners are laying the foundation for long-term development and integration into the European educational and sports space.
Voices Behind the Initiative
Representatives of the partner organizations emphasized that this is only the beginning:
  • A commitment to long-term cooperation
  • A platform for new international projects
  • A shared vision of peace, development, and opportunity through sport

PRESS RELEASE 6 April 2026 –
International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
CHILDREN’S RIGHTS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE – THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN PEACE MUST BE PROTECTED

European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E. – Academy ry
honors the United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with deep respect and solemn responsibility. On this day, we cannot simply celebrate. We must stand in solidarity with children and young people living under the shadow of war – especially in Ukraine and across regions of the Middle East. These children are deprived of safety, stability, and the fundamental right to a peaceful childhood.
Every child has the right to live in a peaceful world.

This is not an ideal. It is a fundamental human right. Children must not grow up surrounded by violence, fear, and destruction. They must not be targets of war. They must not be forgotten.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS A FOUNDATION FOR LIFE AND PEACE

Physical education is not merely activity – it is a vital pillar of children’s development, well-being, and dignity. It builds health, resilience, social connection, and hope. Most importantly, it builds peace. When children are given the opportunity to move, learn, and grow together, they develop into individuals who value cooperation over conflict. Investing in physical education is investing in a more peaceful future for all humanity.
WE STRONGLY CONDEMN ATTACKS AGAINST CHILDREN AND THEIR RIGHTS E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry

issues a clear and uncompromising statement: Any state or leadership that permits or carries out attacks against children – including bombings, killings, kidnappings, and systemic violence – is committing crimes against humanity. Attacks on children’s rights are acts of terror. They can never be justified. They must never be ignored.
A DIRECT ATTACK ON CHILDREN, EDUCATION, AND OUR WORK

On 16 March 2026, a Russian missile and drone attack struck the Mykolaiv region in Ukraine, severely impacting our partner school No. 26. Missile fragments landed on the school grounds, particularly on the football field, and the resulting pressure wave damaged school structures. This was not only a military strike. It was an attack on children, education, and the future. It was also the first direct attack against our organization’s European physical education work for children and youth. We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms. We demand that the leadership of the Russian Federation be held accountable under international law for these terrorist crimes
NO PLACE FOR A STATE THAT VIOLATES CHILDREN’S RIGHTS IN INTERNATIONAL SPORT

A nation whose actions are stained with the blood of innocent children cannot represent the values of sport. Sport stands for peace, respect, and human dignity. Therefore, E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry calls for:
• The exclusion of Russia from international sports competitions for a minimum of 10 years
• Full accountability for crimes committed before any discussion of reinstatement
 • A unified global stance: violations of children’s rights disqualify participation in the international sporting community
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT – A COMMITMENT TO CHILDREN

On 24 January 2026, in honor of the United Nations International Day of Education, our organization launched the European physical education initiative:
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in Ukraine

This initiative is built on one clear principle: Every child matters. Every child has the right to move, learn, and live in peace. Despite attacks and adversity, our work continues – stronger than ever.
A GLOBAL DEMAND: LAY DOWN THE WEAPONS – PROTECT CHILDREN

On this International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we make a direct and urgent demand: The leadership of the Russian Federation must immediately
• lay down its weapons
• cease all attacks
 • end all violations against children’s rights The world must not accept a reality where children are victims of war
FINAL MESSAGE
Children’s rights are not negotiable.
Children’s right to live in peace is absolute.
We must defend it – everywhere, always

Happy International Day of Sport for Development and Peace – 6 April Sincerely,

Russian Missile Terrorism Attack Damages School Linked to Finnish Organization’s Project in Ukraine

A school connected to a Finnish-registered organization’s international youth project EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in Ukraine  has sustained damage following a Russian missile attack in southern Ukraine, the organization announced on Saturday.
According to the European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy (E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry), School No. 26 in the city of Mykolaiv was impacted on March 16, 2026, when a missile terrorism strike caused a powerful shockwave in the area. The blast shattered windows, damaged doors, destroyed a trophy cabinet, and caused structural cracks in the building.
No casualties were reported.
The school is a partner institution in the “Everybody Is Important in Ukraine” project, an initiative aimed at supporting children’s physical education, inclusion, and well-being through sport.
“An attack on a school is an attack on children, education, and the future,” said Chairman Timo Virtanen in a statement. “We strongly condemn this act and reaffirm our commitment to supporting the children and the school community.”
Virtanen announced that he will travel to Mykolaiv on March 24 to assess the damage and meet local partners. During his visit, he plans to document the situation through photographs, interviews, and video material, with the aim of raising international awareness and support.
The organization stated that the attack represents not only physical damage but also a challenge to its mission of promoting children’s rights, safety, and access to education and sport.
“Every child has the right to learn, to play, and to feel safe,” Virtanen said.
The academy intends to launch efforts to support the reconstruction of the school and to provide psychological and community support for the affected children.
Virtanen is expected to remain in the region for approximately one month, during which time the organization will also hold meetings, strengthen partnerships, and plan further activities.
Background
The “Everybody Is Important” project focuses on inclusion, physical education, and youth development, particularly supporting children in vulnerable or crisis-affected areas.
March 21 is observed globally as World Down Syndrome Day, highlighting inclusion and equal opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome—values that are central to the organization’s work.

I had the great honor of participating in School 26’s video meeting in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, on February 25, 2026, at 13:00.
I am very grateful for the invitation, and it was a true pleasure to see my friends, smiling faces – it brought me great joy.
I was very happy to see Anna Hontar via video connection and to hear the questions from the children, teachers, and the principal. I strongly believe that in the future Anna will become an important leader in Ukraine, advocating for the rights of children and youth in the field of physical education.
During my previous visits, I noticed how valuable the work of School 26 is with children. There is an excellent spirit within the school, especially among the teachers. As a coach, I always begin team sports by building team spirit. Creating unity and giving everyone the opportunity to contribute to common goals produces the best results. Based on what I have seen, School 26 will certainly continue to be a strong and exemplary school and educator of children in the future – just as it is today.
Once again, thank you to the students, teachers, principal, and the entire staff of School 26 – and to our Paralympic hero, Anna Hontar. It is truly wonderful to cooperate with you.

Foreword With my book FAIR PLAY COACH,
I want to inspire coaches and instructors working with children and youth in sports and physical activity. Let us together give every child and young person the opportunity to participate with us, or when necessary, guide them across a bridge to another group where they can experience a sense of achievement and feel a sense of belonging among their friends. A child or young person who is left out is also at greater risk of being drawn into drug organizations that exploit them, increasing violence against society, and breaking rules that come at a high cost to us all. Let us also show respect for top athletes in special groups, such as Deaf, intellectually disabled, and Paralympic athletes, who have made history in sports just as much as able-bodied athletes. Let’s all work together to prevent social exclusion, because IN OUR TEAM, EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT.

The proceeds from the book FAIR PLAY Coach will be used to support the EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in Ukraine project, dedicated to physical education work for children and youth in Ukraine during the period 2026–2036.

Chairperson’s Message – Rukh i Sertse Physical Education Guide
Dear friends, educators, coaches, and all who care deeply for the children and youth of Ukraine,
It is a profound honor and heartfelt joy to greet you as we present the Rukh i Sertse – Physical Education Guide. This guide is not just a collection of exercises or instructions – it is a labor of love, created to bring the joy of movement, a sense of safety, and moments of success to every child and young person in Ukraine, no matter their age, abilities, or circumstances.

What makes this work truly historic is that it has been created under extraordinary and challenging conditions. Even as schools, family homes, children’s hospitals, daycare centers, and sports facilities face destruction from Russian bombings, the Rukh i Sertse team continues to plan, design, and build this guide for the children and youth of Ukraine. Every contributor to this guide works with courage, dedication, and unwavering belief in the future of Ukrainian children, despite the dangers and hardships surrounding us.
I want to thank from the bottom of my heart all the educators, coaches, specialists, and volunteers who have devoted their expertise, time, and love to this project. Your work gives children the opportunity to move, to experience joy, to grow in confidence, and to develop the skills that will carry them through life. This guide is a testament to the power of collaboration, hope, and resilience – proof that together, we can create safe and inspiring spaces for every child, even in the darkest times.
Rukh i Sertse is more than a guide – it is a promise to Ukrainian children and youth: You are important. You have the right to move. You have the right to joy. You have the right to be heard.
To all those working tirelessly to bring this guide to life: your courage, passion, and determination are shaping the future of Ukraine. Together, we are not only teaching physical education – we are building resilience, hope, and opportunity for generations to come.
Thank you for believing in children, for believing in the power of movement, and for believing in a brighter, stronger, and safer future for Ukraine’s youth. Your dedication changes lives – and together, we will continue to make a difference, one child at a time.
With deepest respect and gratitude,
Timo Virtanen

Project SAVE OUR SCHOOLS - S.O.S. in Ukraine
My name is Angelina Maltseva, and I am an athlete from Ukraine. I have been professionally involved in swimming since the age of 15, but my love for water appeared much earlier. From childhood, I watched with great admiration athletes who, despite any obstacles, moved toward their goals. They became an example to me of willpower, endurance, and self-belief—proof that the path to a dream can begin in different ways and does not have a single “right” age or starting point.

My journey into professional sport did not begin immediately. In childhood, life circumstances did not allow me to fully realize myself in training; however, this only strengthened my motivation. Over time, I realized that waiting for “ideal conditions” means never starting at all. This understanding became an important lesson for me, and, in my opinion, it is especially valuable for children: it is not circumstances that determine our capabilities, but the decision to move forward. Therefore, as I grew older, I made a conscious decision to turn my dream into reality—step by step, goal by goal, at my own pace.

Sport has become for me not just a physical activity, but a true training ground for discipline, endurance, strength of spirit, and character. It taught me to work on myself every day, even when it would be easier to pause. I became convinced that sport helps children and adolescents believe in their own abilities, learn to accept challenges, and not give up after the first difficulties. Although I believe that I am only at the initial stages of my success, sport has already given me an invaluable treasure: I have become braver, more determined, and more goal-oriented. I learned to understand that results do not come instantly, but are formed through perseverance, patience, and consistent work on oneself. And, importantly, I stopped being afraid of my own pace—in the water, it is always honest. Every training session shapes my character and teaches me that success is a daily process, accessible to everyone who is willing to work.
I sincerely thank the people without whom this journey would not have been possible:
my family—for their support and understanding;
my friends—for their faith in me;
my coaches—for their professionalism, patience, and care, which not only help achieve results, but also show children and young people how important it is to believe in themselves and not be afraid of difficulties.

I would also like to express my special gratitude to Mykolaiv Lyceum No. 60 and its teachers, who invested in me not only knowledge, but also important life values—a desire for self-realization, patriotism, sincerity, and devotion to their country. It was at school that I realized that the combination of education and sport plays a key role in a child’s development, helping to unlock potential, shape character, and prepare for adult life.
Today, I continue my path in sport, convinced of one thing: there are no limits—only the freedom to move forward, one’s own path, and responsibility for one’s choice.
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE
Information Letter No. 1 – 02 February 2026
Dear partners and friends
in the SAVE OUR SCHOOLS – S.O.S. in Ukraine ,

Warm and heartfelt greetings
from the Board of the European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E. – Academy ry.
First and foremost, we wish to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your patience, commitment, and trust during these exceptionally difficult, uncertain, and emotionally demanding times. Your work, your presence, and your support mean more to us than words can express. We want to state this clearly and openly: no one has been forgotten – every partner, every child, every young person, and every family truly matters to us.
Our Board convened for an official meeting on 27–28 January 2026 in Mykolaiv, in the meeting room of the sports school located next to the Mykolaiv Central Stadium. During this meeting, several strategically significant decisions were confirmed, aimed at strengthening and developing our long-term, responsible, and deeply humane cooperation in Ukraine.

A long-term commitment to Ukraine
Our SAVE OUR SCHOOLS – S.O.S. in Ukraine initiative will continue for at least the next ten (10) years. Our goal is to build a sustainable, impactful, and hope-creating future for Ukrainian children and youth, as well as for their parents, who under extremely harsh conditions carry the daily responsibility for their children’s safety, well-being, and future. We want to stand firmly alongside parents and strengthen their resilience and capacity to care for their children during these unimaginable times.
Our project has now officially moved under the umbrella of our organisation, and on UN Education Day, 24 January 2026, we launched EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE. This initiative is rooted in the 30-year-long children’s and youth physical education programme EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT, which celebrated its 30th anniversary on 21 August 2025. We marked this meaningful milestone together with the GO FLAMO organisation at the Mykolaiv Central Stadium through a Children’s Physical Activity Day.
It is clear and unanimously agreed that EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in UKRAINE will be implemented step by step, permanently, and across the entire territory of Ukraine. In addition, our aim is to establish, in cooperation with the City and Regional Administration of Mykolaiv, Mykolaiv Regional University, local sports clubs, and sports schools, a European Academy for Children’s and Youth Physical Education training and research centre. In this endeavour, Mykolaiv Regional University will play a particularly important role in conducting scientific research and development work to support Ukrainian children, youth, and the broader societal reconstruction through physical education.
Coordination in Ukraine
During the meeting, it was decided that Mr. Anatolii Bugaiev will serve as the official Ukraine Regional Coordinator of our organisation. His role is central to the practical coordination of activities, addressing local needs, and strengthening cooperation at all levels. Mr. Anatoli Bugoiov was also appointed Honorary Member No. 1 of the association.
New structures to strengthen our work
We decided to further enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of our activities by establishing and coordinating:
  • new divisions for operational work
  • functional working groups to support field activities
  • Councils for expert consultation and strategic development
These structures will primarily engage active Ukrainian citizens whose hearts are dedicated to protecting the future of Ukrainian children. At the same time, internationally recognised top-level experts will also be involved—professionals who are ready to defend children’s and youth physical education in all crisis conditions.
We are especially grateful to our official expert, Professor Caterina Pesce, for her strong commitment to the well-being and future of Ukrainian children. Her work serves as a guiding light and a vital source of strength for our organisation.
Through these structures, we will be better equipped to respond to the mental and physical needs of Ukrainian children and youth, including children with disabilities, special-needs groups, and babies, children, and young people traumatised by war.

Greetings!
My greetings to the student youth.
I, Anatolii Ivanovych Buhaiov – Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports, Distinguished Educator of Ukraine – have devoted my entire life to sport. My professional career spans more than 55 years. During these years, working as a coach and in leadership positions, I have made my contribution to the training of high-class athletes. Among them are many Masters of Sport, record holders of Ukraine, European medalists, and participants of the Olympic Games.

I have made a significant contribution to the development of athletics in the Mykolaiv region and in Ukraine as a whole. I headed the Athletics Federation of the Mykolaiv region, serving as its General Secretary and President. For nearly twenty years, as director of the Specialized Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve, I led the sports school to become one of the best in Ukraine.
Our sports club participated seven times in the European Cup for club teams. In the Champions League, our teams became champions and prize winners of these prestigious European competitions. Nearly all of our outstanding girls won medals and championship titles in their athletics disciplines.
Champions are not born. Champions and heroes are made through motivation and tremendous hard work. All of our champions were ordinary children like everyone else. Years of training, love for athletics, great dedication, diligence, and the desire to achieve their goals made them record holders and champions. At different periods of their lives, it was not easy for them. They survived the Chornobyl disaster, various historical challenges, and economic hardships, yet they found the strength within themselves to move toward their goals in life. You, too, have faced a great trial – war.
We hope that you will continue the glorious traditions of Mykolaiv athletics. Many of its representatives are today on the front lines defending you. Some athletes gave their lives for your future. Glory to the Armed Forces of Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!
All children are talented. Talent must be recognized and developed. In athletics there are many specializations – everyone can find their calling here: short or tall, slim or strong – only the desire is needed. Athletics is the most accessible sport.
We understand that not everyone will become a champion, but everyone needs good health. Moreover, sport develops many qualities necessary to become a happy and successful person.
Do you want to be healthy, beautiful, strong, intelligent, resilient, happy, powerful?
Go in for sports!

EU Project: PEACE through PLAYS
We would like to share an important and hope-inspiring update with you:
Our organisation has submitted an EU funding application for the project PEACE through PLAYS. The application was prepared in close cooperation with our official EU advisor, Professor Caterina Pesce, and particularly at her initiative and recommendation.
Professor Pesce is an internationally renowned expert in physical education and child well-being. Her JOY OF MOVING approach has received exceptional international recognition and is already implemented in several countries. Her work is grounded in strong scientific evidence, humanity, and deep respect for children’s rights—and its value for children living in the midst of war is immeasurable.
The PEACE through PLAYS project is implemented in cooperation with the following partners:
  • European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E. – Academy ry
  • Expert Advisor: Professor Caterina Pesce
  • University of Patras
  • Patrizio Paoletti Foundation
  • GO FLAMO
  • Inquirium
The European Union will make its funding decision no later than August 2026. A key assessment criterion is that the project is implemented specifically in Ukraine, under war conditions, and in response to real and urgent needs. It is especially important that the first three (3) years of the project focus on the City of Mykolaiv and the Mykolaiv region, where the psychological, social, and physical support needs of children and youth are exceptionally high.
A heartfelt welcome to  Ukraine champion.
We are equally delighted to welcome Angelina Maltseva, 13-time Ukrainian champion in swimming, with a special focus on inclusive swimming, adaptive physical education, and opportunities for children and youth with disabilities and special needs.
Our Board receives these outstanding  champion with open hearts and deep gratitude.Angelina presence strengthens our commitment to equality, inclusion, and the fundamental right of every child to move, to play, to dream, and to thrive.
Angelina Maltseva, welcome to our shared mission. Your experience, resilience, and humanity will help us build pathways of hope—for children, for families, and for a more inclusive future for Ukraine.

A shared message from the heart
We wish to say this once more, clearly and from the heart:
Our cooperation with you is invaluable to us. Despite the immense challenges, we will continue this work with courage, humanity, and mutual trust. Together, we are building hope, safety, and a future for children—and supporting their parents at the same time—children who have an undeniable right to protection, care, play, and dignity.
Warm regards and our deepest gratitude to you all.
Let us stay strong, care for one another, and continue this vital work together.
With sincere respect,
